Students involved in research activities will gain expertise in many areas of organic, bioorganic and analytical chemistry, chiral recognition studies, investigation of the stereodynamics of chiral compounds using variable-temperature NMR and dynamic chromatography, high-throughput screening of chiral catalysts, transition metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions, drug discovery and development, and chiral chromatography. Our routine bench work includes the handling of reactive compounds under inert atmosphere and cryogenic conditions as well as purification of reaction products by flash chromatography and other techniques. In addition, we use various techniques such as NMR, IR, CD, fluorescence spectroscopy, a microwave for synthesis, GC, LC, GC-MS, LC-MS, elemental analysis, X-ray crystallography, and enantioselective chromatography (GC, HPLC, or SFC) and electrophoresis to characterize and explore the properties of rationally designed organic compounds.
