First Friday and Journal Club are back!

Posted in News

After a roughly 2-year hiatus due to COVID-19, GSOC was able to return to hosting regularly scheduled Journal Clubs and First Fridays on September 24th and October 1st. Journal club saw a record turnout in the first two meetings after the return from the shutdown. On October 1st, in collaboration with the DEI, the Journal Club focused on celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. Multiple members of the department were generous enough to volunteer their time to put together not only a presentation about their Hispanic heritage but also brought snacks! Anamar Blanes discussed Puerto Rico, Lulio Sanz discussed Cuba, and Emilia Moscoso discussed Guatemala. Being able to use events like Journal Club to collaborate with DEI and learn about the cultures of graduate students in the department was a fantastic opportunity. As always, both First Fridays were a great success with roughly 30 members of the department in attendance. It was great to see so many graduate students showing up and hope that this will continue in the future. GSOC will continue to host regularly scheduled happy hours at Epicurean and Journal Clubs on the first Friday of every month.  If you have questions about GSOC events or ideas for future programming, reach out to Megan Fleming (mef276@georgetown.edu) or Trevor Lyons (tml83@georgetown.edu).
