Thank you for your interest in our doctoral program in Chemistry. Georgetown University has an international reputation for excellence in many fields, and our strategy to preserve that reputation is to maintain well-funded and well-equipped laboratories of moderate size but of outstanding quality.
The Department currently has sixteen highly interactive research groups and boasts a 4:1 graduate student to faculty ratio. Most research groups typically include three to five graduate students, a postdoctoral associate, and one or two undergraduate student researchers. A highly collaborative atmosphere pervades both the Department of Chemistry and the Georgetown University community as a whole. Chemistry graduate students enjoy immediate proximity to adjacent facilities in the Departments of Physics, Biology, Math, and Computer Science, as well as other university centers and institutes including the Georgetown University Medical Center, the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the Center for Infectious Disease.
Many significant infrastructure improvements have taken place with more on the horizon. In 2006, the department office and one research group moved into space newly available in the Reiss Science Building. In early 2008, three synthesis-oriented research groups moved to newly renovated, first-class space in the Basic Science Building that includes a new, full-equipped instrumentation lab. The University broke ground in 2010 on a new science center, and we are excited about the move of many research groups into Regents Hall, pictured left, by August 2012. The new center will house several laboratories of the department and a new Institute of Soft Matter. To keep pace with our facilities improvements, internal funds and grants from the National Science Foundation assist us in regularly upgrading our equipment.
The campus—located in Washington, D.C., an amazing city that is a major center of intellectual activity—is a few miles from the most complete library in the world and leading governmental laboratories, such as the National Institutes of Health, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the Naval Research Laboratory. The University is also within close proximity to a number of major public and private museums, archives, and galleries. Most of our faculty and students find these to be of considerable value in their work and professional growth.
With such resources available in our Department, throughout Georgetown, and in the Washington, D.C. area, graduate students benefit from excellent cross-disciplinary experiences and training. As you likely know, such interdisciplinary training is essential for continued success in the rapidly changing world of chemistry. The proof is on our results: our alumni are employed in a broad range of fields including academia, industry, and government.
